Don't Take Rides From Strangers

Didn't your mother tell you not to take rides from strangers?  Bad things happen to those who do not heed their mother's warning.

Car dealers frequently use direct mail advertising to bring potential buyers to the dealership.   Some consumers without transportation have responded to these promotions and then accepted offers to have a salesman pick them up to go to the dealership to look at cars. How nice of them to offer.

If you feel like Little Red Riding Hood when you step into the salesman's car, there's a reason. Four hours into a high pressure sales presentation, exactly how do you intend to get up and leave?  The guy across the table from you doesn't make any money until you sign a very unfavorable contract--and he's your ride home.  You lost this negotiation at your front curb when you ignored your mother's advice.

Your most powerful tool in negotiating a car purchase is the option to get up and leave.  Unfortunately, I have had several cases where elderly women have accepted rides to car dealerships only to return hours later having made very bad deals on not only the cars, but the financing as well.

So remember to always do what your mother told you; don't take rides from strangers.

And one last thing ... don't forget to remind your mother.
