Hall of Shame

Legal Assistant Aaron Johnson

The Majority of the Credit Card Industry

--For late fees, over limit fees, default interest rates, universal default, etc. etc.  The "exploding credit card" has lead to the financial demise of many hard working families in Iowa and throughout the U.S.

Congress

--For its failure to do anything about "exploding credit cards."  Campaign contributions speak far louder than the interests of consumers.

Corporate Democrats in the Iowa Legislature

--For killing off legislation to retain Iowa's protection for consumers in credit transactions

The National Arbitration Forum and the American Arbitration Association

--For administering arbitrations in a manner patently unfair to consumers.

Congress--Again

--For its failure to ban pre-dispute mandatory consumer arbitration.

Corporte Democrats in the Iowa Legislature--Again

--For failing to support consumer rights legislation.  Iowa is the only state in the U.S. without a private right to file suit under state laws prohibiting fraud and deception.

Hall of Fame

Representative Eric Palmer

--For his work on consumer and tenant's rights legislation in Iowa and putting the interests of Iowa consumers above filling his own campaign coffers with money from corporate interests opposed to the legislation.

Senator Joe Bolkcom

--For his work on legislation to end the abusive practice of title pawn lending.  Title pawns were loans with interest rates often exceeding 300%.  High rates of repossessions of vehicles, often from the working poor, jeopardized the borrower's ability to get to work and to hold a job.

Representative Janet Petersen

--In addition to taking the lead on the state wide smoking ban, when the Iowa Supreme Court recently ruled the Iowa Consumer Credit Code does not protect consumers in cell phone contracts, Representative Petersen immediately went to work and introduced legislation to incorporate cell phone contracts into the Credit Code, thereby protecting Iowa consumers from being held hostage to early termination penalties--penalties sometimes as high $200 per line for a five phone share talk line.  It is refreshing to see a Representative who not only responds to the needs of Iowa consumers, but who actually takes the initiative BEFORE consumer advocates come to her.  Now that's what leadership is all about!!

Senator Staci Appel

--For putting the lives of Iowa Casino employees above powerful tobacco interests and fighting for removal of an exemption for Casinos from the proposed smoking ban.  Representative Appel also supports Consumer Rights Legislation.
